You Can Lead a Horse...

At the last jamboree a database was used to track the reasons for all the visits to the medical tent. Without a doubt the major problem of the first day was dehydration.

On the first day of the jamboree the temperature was 94 degrees. There were 104 visits to the medical tent that day for heat exhaustion. Several people were sent to the army hospital for intravenous fluid replacement. We feel that many scouts are dehydrated before they get off the bus. They probably had dinner and then didn't drink very much over night and on the bus. Therefore, we can estimate that they were about one liter of fluid behind. The work required to set up the camp is significant and much more water is lost from sweat. No matter how much the scout drinks it is difficult to catch up.

The medical staff strongly recommends that all scouts and leaders drink one liter of water while on the bus. We do not recommend any drink with caffeine in it as it is likely to make you urinate excessively and thus result in less gain of water. Gatorade type drinks are fine but not necessary.

Safety First!!

It won't be the last time you hear that this will be the Safest Jamboree Ever!

Troops are reminded that gateways cannot be over 10 feet tall; If they exceed this height, they will be asked to take them down or modify them to meet the height regulation.

The height regulation is in force for everything in the troop campsites: tents, flagpoles, and tarps. Nothing may be over ten feet high and no tent can be set up within 10 feet of any power line.
